When deciding you want a website it can fast become a daunting project. The design and style of the website can take days or weeks to develop if you are unsure of what direction to go in. There are so many different styles that you literally have to research them before you can make a decision.

A minimal website is essentially the same, but it takes the design to its most basic form and keeps the page almost clear of images and design. The type-based focuses more on content and lets the typography become the design while keeping the website simple and functional.
As for the other styles, it is in the same realm. For instance take sketchy, collage, and illustrated. These would all be websites that have a hand drawn, or hand created feel to them. These sites focus more on personality and a unique design. Solid colors, fabric, and wood are more elemental based. These categories represent more of the style in which is used for backgrounds and how the texture relates to the business the website is about.
Never be confined to just a single style the wonderful thing about web design is that you are able to create whatever you want. The basics will always come from one of these categories but from there it is up to you and the designer to make it unique and call it your own. You never know when something new will be the latest trend.
